SHARE NOW

Bishop John S. Bonnici has been appointed the 10th bishop of the Diocese of Rochester.

The Vatican announced that Pope Leo XIV has named Bonnici — who currently serves as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of New York — to lead the Rochester Diocese. He will be formally installed on March 19.

Bonnici will succeed Bishop Salvatore R. Matano, whose resignation has been accepted by the Pope. Matano, 79, has served as bishop of Rochester since 2014.

The Diocese of Rochester includes 12 counties across the Finger Lakes and Greater Rochester region and serves tens of thousands of Catholics.

Further details about Bishop Bonnici’s installation and public events surrounding the transition are expected to be announced by the diocese in the coming weeks.
