Fire crews in Auburn battled a garage fire Sunday morning at 118 South Fulton Street, successfully keeping the flames from spreading to the attached residence.
The Cayuga County 911 Center received a call about the possible structure fire at 10:36 a.m., and the first fire company arrived within three minutes to find heavy smoke and flames coming from a two-story attached garage. Firefighters initially faced challenges because the nearest hydrant was frozen. Crews relied on tank water from multiple fire apparatus until another hydrant about 500 feet away could be connected, providing a steady water supply for the remainder of the incident.
A second alarm was requested to bring in off-duty crews, ensuring additional support at the scene and coverage for the rest of the city. The fire was contained to the attached garage and a nearby garage on Hoffman Street; the apartments in the building suffered minimal damage. The fire was brought under control within an hour.

All occupants were evacuated safely, and no injuries were reported. Those displaced are being assisted by the American Red Cross.
Assisting at the scene were Auburn City Ambulance, the Auburn Police Department, the city’s code and public works departments, and NYSEG.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
