A Bath woman is facing multiple felony charges following an investigation by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office.
On Monday, investigators arrested 64-year-old Caroline Speer after it was alleged that between February 1 and August 31 of this year, she submitted false information to the Steuben County Department of Social Services and improperly received $1,999 in public assistance benefits she was not eligible to collect.
Speer is charged with offering a false instrument for filing in the first degree, welfare fraud in the fourth degree, falsifying business records in the first degree, and grand larceny in the fourth degree, all Class E felonies.
She was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to return to Village of Bath Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
