Oswego County Couple Arrested Following Animal Welfare Investigation

SHARE NOW

The New York State Police have arrested an Oswego County couple following an investigation into an animal welfare complaint.

The case began on September 1, when troopers responded to a complaint on Kasoag Lake Road in the Town of Williamstown. The landlord, concerned about the condition of the apartment as the tenants were moving out, initially tried to contact 47-year-old Jason McGriff and 42-year-old Melissa McGriff but received no response. After proper notice, the landlord entered the residence and discovered multiple deceased animals, prompting a call to State Police.

Troopers later contacted the McGriffs, who claimed they had been staying elsewhere and denied that animals were in the apartment. The investigation revealed that several cats, dogs, rabbits, and guinea pigs previously in their care had died inside the residence.

Both Jason and Melissa McGriff have been charged with seven counts each of torturing or injuring animals or failure to provide sustenance, a Class A misdemeanor under Agriculture and Markets Law, as well as abandonment of animals, also a Class A misdemeanor.

Appearance tickets were issued for both individuals, who are scheduled to appear in Oswego County CAP Court on New Year’s Day.
