New York State Electric & Gas (NYSEG) has commissioned two new mobile substations, increasing the combined NYSEG and Rochester Gas and Electric (RG&E) fleet to 24 active units. The mobile substations help provide reliable power to nearly 1.3 million electric customers across New York.
“Mobile substations are incredibly vital to maintaining the electrical system’s reliability,” said NYSEG President Marc Geaumont. “Extreme weather is constantly testing the resilience of our grid. These mobile units help ensure customers can continue their daily lives uninterrupted.”
Mobile substations are used during emergency outages, planned maintenance, or when additional energy load is needed, temporarily bypassing permanent substations. They can remain on-site from a few hours up to a year, depending on the situation. The new units, funded through the 2023 rate case, replace older units and include upgraded safety features for workers.
In March, a mobile substation from Plattsburgh supported more than 1,000 customers during a prolonged outage at the Colliers substation in Oneonta. After repairs were completed, the unit returned to standby.
NYSEG and RG&E have proposed a $16.1 billion investment through 2031 to modernize grid infrastructure across more than 40% of Upstate New York, improving energy quality and reliability for customers.
