Gas prices across New York State continue to trend lower heading into the busy holiday travel period, according to AAA of Western and Central New York.
AAA reports the New York State average price for a gallon of regular gasoline is $3.07, down three cents from last Monday. One year ago, the statewide average stood at $3.13. The current New York average remains above the national average of $2.86, which is down five cents over the past week and eight cents lower than this time last year.
AAA Western and Central New York reports the following regional averages:
- Batavia: $3.10, down 3 cents
- Buffalo: $3.14, unchanged
- Elmira: $2.90, down 5 cents
- Ithaca: $3.19, down 2 cents
- Rochester: $3.14, down 1 cent
- Rome: $3.14, down 2 cents
- Syracuse: $3.04, down 2 cents
- Watertown: $3.09, down 4 cents
AAA says the drop in prices is welcome news for holiday travelers. An estimated 109.5 million Americans are expected to drive at least 50 miles from home between December 20 and January 1, a two percent increase from 2024.
The national average has remained below $3 per gallon since December 2, making this the cheapest December at the pump since 2020, according to AAA. Crude oil prices continue to remain low, trading between $57 and $61 per barrel, while gasoline supplies remain strong despite increased seasonal demand. Data from the Energy Information Administration shows gasoline demand rose from 8.45 million barrels per day to 9.07 million, while overall supply increased by nearly five million barrels.
Diesel prices are also declining. The national average for diesel is $3.59, down four cents from last week, while the New York average is $3.90, down two cents over the same period.
