Firefighters Prevent Spread of Schuyler County House Fire

SHARE NOW

A residential fire in the Town of Cayuta was quickly contained on Sunday, thanks to a working smoke detector and a fast response by the homeowner and fire crews.

The Odessa Fire Department reports that upon arrival, firefighters found the occupant safely outside the home and were able to shut off electrical power at an exterior breaker.

An investigation determined the fire originated inside a living room electrical outlet. Fire officials say a multi-outlet power adapter plugged into the outlet experienced a component failure, generating high heat and igniting a small fire that began climbing the interior wall.

The smoke detector alerted the occupant, who woke up, saw the fire, applied an extinguishing agent to the outlet, and evacuated the home to call 911. After shutting off the power, fire crews checked for fire extension inside the wall and found no additional damage.

The fire was contained to the electrical outlet and its connected components, with no further spread reported.

Fire officials say the incident underscores the importance of working smoke detectors, having an evacuation plan, calling 911 immediately, and using only UL-tested electrical equipment.
