A former Marcy Correctional Facility officer has been sentenced to the maximum penalty for the killing of an inmate.
David Kingsley was sentenced Friday morning to 25 years to life in prison for the murder of Robert Brooks. The sentence was imposed at the request of prosecutors. Kingsley’s defense had argued for a 15-year sentence.
Kingsley was convicted following a trial in Oneida County Court on October 20. A jury found him guilty of both murder and manslaughter in connection with Brooks’ death.
The case stems from an incident on December 9, 2024, the same day Brooks was transferred from Mohawk Correctional Facility to Marcy. Body-worn camera video released by the New York State Attorney General’s Office showed officers punching, kicking, and grabbing Brooks by the neck. Brooks, a Rochester resident, died the following day at the age of 43.
At the time of his death, Brooks was serving a 12-year prison sentence for assault after being convicted of stabbing his girlfriend in the Town of Greece. He was scheduled to be released in 2026.
