Two inmates were arrested following an investigation into alleged drug possession inside the Steuben County Jail.
Authorities say deputies arrested 43-year-old Thomas Whitehead of Corning and 33-year-old Thomas Robbins of Addison on Tuesday. Both men were already incarcerated at the jail when investigators allegedly discovered they were in possession of suspected methamphetamine.
Whitehead and Robbins have been charged with first-degree possession of dangerous prison contraband, a class D felony, and seventh-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance. They were arraigned in Centralized Arraignment Court and returned to the Steuben County Jail.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation is ongoing to determine how the suspected contraband was introduced into the jail.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
