Former Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould has endorsed Rob Franklin, a detective lieutenant with the sheriff’s office, for the county’s top law enforcement post, according to the Auburn Citizen.
Gould, who served three terms as sheriff, highlighted Franklin’s long-standing ties to the county and his career in law enforcement. Franklin, a Marine Corps veteran, joined the sheriff’s office shortly after completing his military service and has held multiple leadership roles, including overseeing the criminal investigations, identification and records divisions.
The race for sheriff opens up as two-term incumbent Brian Schenck has announced he will not seek reelection in 2026. Franklin faces competition from Chris Major, a retired Auburn police officer also pursuing the Republican and Conservative nominations.
Gould’s endorsement is expected to provide Franklin with early support as he campaigns for the office.
