Witnesses Report Abuse, Prompting Animal Cruelty Arrest in Geneva

Authorities seized multiple animals and made an arrest following an animal cruelty investigation in the City of Geneva.

According to the Ontario County Humane Society, the Geneva Police Department, and the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office, officers responded to an animal complaint on December 12 at 282 Main Street. The complaint was reported by two individuals who were at the residence of Richard Farrell Jr. to install a utility.

The individuals told authorities they witnessed Farrell allegedly strike his dog multiple times with an open hand and punch the dog in the head with his fist. Investigators say the witnesses also observed unsanitary living conditions inside the apartment, along with an overwhelming odor.

As a result of the investigation, authorities seized a total of 12 animals from the residence, including two dogs—a male Pitbull and a female Rottweiler—and 10 cats. The animals were transported to the Happy Tails Animal Shelter for immediate care.

Initial examinations found that all of the animals were suffering from parasites. Some of the cats were underweight and had ear infections. The Rottweiler did not appear to have visible injuries. Officials say all of the animals are receiving ongoing medical treatment.

Farrell was arrested and charged with animal cruelty. He was later released on an appearance ticket.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
