Auburn native Ormie King has died at the age of 87. His son, Jeff, announced the passing over the weekend.
King was a lifelong champion of Auburn, known for his love of local history, sports, and community service. A former Auburn Athletic Hall of Famer, he later founded the Legends of Auburn column, which ran for decades in The Post-Standard and The Citizen, highlighting everyday people and moments from the city’s past.
King also co-founded the Legends restaurant, helped preserve Auburn’s softball history, served as a Cayuga County legislator and Auburn city councilor, and spent years helping seniors through the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
Remembered for his belief that everyone deserves recognition, King often signed off his work with the motto: “Live life, cheat death, and laugh often.”
