The 32nd annual Checkout Hunger campaign brought in another major boost for families across the Southern Tier, raising $236,745 through customer donations at Wegmans stores. According to the Food Bank of the Southern Tier, that total translates into 710,235 meals for residents facing food insecurity.
Throughout the campaign, shoppers were able to donate at checkout, with every dollar providing up to three meals for local households. This year’s effort also included a traveling “GratiTour,” recognizing customers and store teams for their support.
Store-by-store highlights included:
• Johnson City — $65,697 raised (197,091 meals)
• Ithaca — $51,936 raised (155,808 meals)
• Elmira — $38,299 raised (114,897 meals)
• Corning — $46,142 raised (138,426 meals)
• Hornell — $34,671 raised (104,013 meals)
The Food Bank of the Southern Tier serves Broome, Chemung, Schuyler, Steuben, Tioga, and Tompkins counties. In addition to emergency food distribution, the organization operates the BackPack Program, Kids’ Farmers Markets, and a Mobile Food Pantry to reach families where they live.
