Sonnenberg Gardens has named longtime volunteer Ken Hutton as the recipient of this year’s Mary Clark Thompson Award, an honor recognizing volunteers whose dedication, spirit, and service embody the heart of the estate.
Ken began volunteering at Sonnenberg more than 20 years ago with the “Band of Brothers,” a close-knit maintenance group based in the historic Carriage House. One of his earliest projects—a spring cleanout of the Rock Garden—introduced him to the estate’s beauty and scope. Since then, he has contributed to nearly every area of the property, including a season as a tram driver, where he shared stories and insights with visitors.
“Don’t have expectations. Just be ready,” Ken says of his approach to volunteering. He enjoys the historic gardens and buildings, the camaraderie of fellow volunteers and staff, and the opportunity to meet visitors from around the world. The Japanese Garden, with its Buddha statue and stone arrangements, remains his favorite spot, and watching guests experience it for the first time is one of his most cherished moments.
Ken has taken on a wide range of projects over the years, from rebuilding steps at the Tea House to repairing the Community Garden fence. Greenhouse restoration is often a priority, and seeing the lasting impact of his work gives him a quiet sense of pride. While he enjoys the peaceful beauty of winter, fall is his favorite season, when the estate is vibrant with rich color.
Before volunteering, Ken spent 16 years teaching social studies at Marcus Whitman after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from SUNY Geneseo, following studies at Herkimer Community College. His love of history and storytelling has also led him to volunteer for Mansion Mysteries shows and explore genealogical research through the “Find a Grave” project.
“A genuine thank you—that’s what volunteers appreciate most,” Ken says. Sonnenberg staff agree, praising his decades of service, enthusiasm, and the joy he brings to everyone at the estate.
“This award reflects Ken’s dedication and the spirit that makes Sonnenberg Gardens thrive,” said staff members who nominated him.
