Sterling Man Arrested for Stabbing During Weekend Altercation

A Cayuga County man has been arrested after allegedly stabbing another man over the weekend.

According to the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a Sterling residence around 10:39 on Saturday night for a 911 hang-up complaint. Upon arrival, deputies found Russell Patchen outside with a head laceration and a person inside the residence with stab wounds.

The office reports that an investigation determined that the 61-year-old Patchen was involved in a physical altercation with a female when the male victim attempted to break up the fight. This is when Patchen is accused of stabbing the man with a letter opener, getting on top of him, and continuing to stab him.

Authorities said the victim was able to grab a glass ashtray and hit Patchen in the head with it, causing him to become disoriented, allowing the victim to escape.

The victim was treated at the scene by medical personnel; however, the sheriff’s office said he refused to be taken to the hospital. Patchen was arrested and taken to Auburn Community Hospital for treatment. He was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon and Assault, both felonies.

Patchen was then taken to the Public Safety Building for processing and arraignment, where bail was set at $10,000 cash or $20,000 bond.

On Monday, Patchen posted bail, the sheriff’s office said. He is set to appear in Sterling Town Court at a later date.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the sheriff’s office at 315-253-1222 or on the office’s website.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
