A Webster man was arrested Thursday after deputies say he stole merchandise from a Farmington store and then returned it for cash.
The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office says 56-year-old Wendell Sergeant was taken into custody at Eastview Mall following an investigation involving the Byrne Dairy in Farmington. Deputies say Sergeant stole items from the store, then brought the same merchandise back and received money for the return.
He was charged with first-degree falsifying business records and petit larceny.
Sergeant was taken to the Ontario County Jail for centralized arraignment and was remanded without bail. He’s due back in Farmington Town Court at a later date.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
