The Schuyler County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of retired Sheriff William E. Yessman Jr., who passed away on Saturday, November 29.
Yessman’s commitment to public service began long before his law enforcement career. He first served in the United States Coast Guard, demonstrating the dedication to duty that would later define his decades with Schuyler County.
Funeral arrangements are available here.
Yessman joined the Sheriff’s Office in 1985, working in the Schuyler County Jail and the 911 Communications Center before moving to the Road Patrol Division as a Deputy Sheriff. Over the years, he rose through the ranks—serving as Sergeant, Lieutenant, and a longtime K-9 Handler—before being appointed Undersheriff under Sheriff Mike Maloney.
In 2006, Yessman was elected Sheriff of Schuyler County, a role he fulfilled with steady leadership and professionalism until his retirement in 2021. During his 36-year career, he became known as a mentor to many, shaping the careers of Deputy Sheriffs and influencing generations of law enforcement professionals who continue to serve the community.
After retiring, Yessman cherished time with his family, especially his grandchildren. Those who knew him say his love for both family and community was unmistakable.
Sheriff Kevin P. Rumsey and members of the Sheriff’s Office extended their condolences to Yessman’s wife, Anne, his son, Sergeant Andrew Yessman, and the entire Yessman family.
