The Auburn YMCA will remain at its longtime home on 27 William Street and undergo a major renovation, officials announced Monday. The project, expected to cost more than $20 million, will take at least five years to complete.
After months of planning, community input, and evaluating potential new sites, the YMCA board concluded that upgrading the current facility would have the greatest impact. The renovation aims to modernize spaces, improve accessibility, and expand programs for families, youth, seniors, and other members across Cayuga County.
“This is a historic moment for the Auburn YMCA,” CEO Scott Sincerbeaux said in a statement. “Investing in our home at 27 William Street is the most effective way to serve the community today and for generations to come.”
The YMCA announced it will keep the public informed on planning, design, fundraising, and other updates as the project moves forward. The current facility, originally opened in 1939, was last renovated in 1970, when a pool, gym, indoor track, racquetball courts and locker rooms were added.
