The Keuka College women’s basketball team hit the road Tuesday night, heading to Alfred State for a non-conference matchup that ended in a 63–51 setback for the Wolves.
Junior forward Brooke Burd (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) continued her dominant stretch of play, posting her fourth straight double-double—and fifth of the season—with 15 points and 15 rebounds. The performance also marked the 10th double-double of her career, already placing her fourth all-time in program history.
Slow Start Sets Early Tone
Both teams opened the game cold, combining for five missed field goals before Burd broke the scoreless stretch nearly two minutes in. Alfred State quickly answered with a 7–0 run to take the lead.
First-year guard Lillian Mullen (Canisteo, N.Y./Canisteo-Greenwood) sparked the Wolves with five straight points to tie the game at 7–7, but the Pioneers countered with an 11–2 burst, complete with a buzzer-beater, to take an 18–9 advantage after one quarter.
Pioneers Control the Glass
Alfred State maintained its momentum into the second quarter, opening with another 11-point run to stretch the lead to 37–16. The Wolves responded with an eight-point surge to trim the deficit to 15 at halftime, trailing 37–22.
Rebounding proved to be the key storyline of the opening half, with Keuka College outrebounded 30–14.
Wolves Push Back in the Second Half
Keuka came out of the break energized, putting together a 10–2 run sparked by four points from Janea Hamilton-Brown (Liverpool, N.Y./Liverpool) to pull within seven. But once again, Alfred State countered, closing the third quarter on an 11–2 run to rebuild its cushion.
In the fourth, the Wolves continued to fight. Three-pointers from Mullen and Hamilton-Brown fueled an 8–2 start to the quarter, but the Pioneers delivered key baskets down the stretch to keep the game out of reach.
