As families across the region prepare to gather for Thanksgiving, Steuben County marked the season of gratitude with a heartfelt celebration honoring adoptive families and the children who now have a forever home. The county’s annual Adoption Awareness Month event brought together joy, reflection, and a powerful reminder of what it means to open your heart—especially during a time centered on family.
The Conference Center at the Steuben County Annex in Bath was filled with warmth as adoptive families, children, and county staff gathered for a morning of celebration. Earlier in the day, Honorable Judge Chauncey Watches finalized several adoptions, creating permanent family bonds just days before the holiday.
A highlight of the event was a moving address from Kathryn Muller, Commissioner of the Steuben County Department of Social Services.
“Over the past 25 years, together, we have celebrated 381 adoptions,” she said. “Every adoption is a unique journey and a testament to the profound bond that brings parents and children together.”

Following the ceremony, families and staff shared a celebratory luncheon—swapping stories, laughter, and memories in the making, much like the gatherings happening across Thanksgiving tables this week.
Adding to the recognition, Legislature Chair Kelly Fitzpatrick recently presented a proclamation declaring November as Adoption Awareness Month in Steuben County, honoring the dedication of families who choose adoption.
Commissioner Muller praised those families, calling adoptive parents “unsung heroes who provide not just shelter and sustenance but a foundation of love, support, and understanding—a place where children can grow, thrive, and blossom into the best versions of themselves.”

As Thanksgiving approaches, Steuben County says it is especially proud to celebrate these families and the spirit of giving that defines adoption—reminding the community that the greatest gift often comes in the form of a loving, permanent home.
