The crowd was so big, the meeting didn’t even happen.
Residents packed the Brutus Town Hall last Thursday night for a public hearing on Byrne Dairy’s plan to build a gas station and convenience store at the old Shurfine site in Weedsport. But within minutes, the place hit capacity, more than 50 people inside, with a line still out the door. Town officials shut it down and postponed the hearing to December 11th at a larger, yet unnamed venue.
The proposal from Byrne Dairy comes after Weedsport lost its only grocery store when Shurfine abruptly closed in February, blaming financial struggles and big-box competition.
