One of the five people facing federal charges following September’s ICE raid in Cato has pleaded guilty to illegally reentering the United States.
WSTM-TV in Syracuse reports Luis Fernando Morales Jom, a citizen of Guatemala, accepted responsibility for returning to the country after a prior removal and has agreed to deportation.
In a letter submitted to the court, Morales Jom’s attorney said he has no criminal history and described him as a “kind man seeking a better life.” The attorney wrote that Morales Jom came to the U.S. to work and send money home to his family in Guatemala, adding that he regrets returning after being previously removed.
The case is one of several stemming from the September raid, during which dozens of workers were detained by federal agents at Nutrition Bar Confectioners in Cato.
