Tampered Smoke Alarms Found After Geneva Apartment Smoke Rescue

SHARE NOW

The Geneva Fire Department responded to 260 North Street, North Street Apartments, early this morning after an automatic fire alarm signaled a possible emergency.

Crews arrived at 8:03 a.m. to find heavy smoke on the building’s second floor. Firefighters discovered an unresponsive person in the hallway outside Apartment 206, quickly moving the victim to a safe area and providing emergency care until EMS arrived. The individual was transported to Geneva General Hospital by Finger Lakes Ambulance.

Two other tenants reported smoke inhalation concerns but were treated and released at the scene.

Fire crews cleared smoke from the corridor and the affected apartment, then checked all second-floor units for occupants, smoke conditions, and any fire extension. Investigators determined the incident was caused by unattended cooking in Apartment 206. Firefighters also found that the apartment’s smoke detectors had been disabled, delaying the alarm and allowing smoke to spread more widely.

The Geneva Fire Marshal’s Office remained at the building to conduct a full safety sweep with the property manager, documenting and addressing additional issues—including at least one other apartment with tampered smoke alarms.

Thanks to the quick response, officials said no major damage occurred to the building or the unit involved. Finger Lakes Ambulance and Ontario County 911 assisted at the scene.
