The Community Center serves youth, families and seniors with a focus on empowering Newark through building community and recreation. They have recently received three grants which will support the mission of the Center.

A grant of $17,950 was obtained through the NYS Office of Children and Family Services for a mentoring and tutoring program. The grant is administered by the Wayne County Youth Bureau. Selected high school students, trained through MENTORNY, will offer individual attention to children in grades 3-5 providing them academic and social support in the school environment.  Please call the Center at 315-331- 2532 to get more information for enrolling your child in the UPLIFT program.

The Robert G Boehmler Community Foundation has provided a grant of $1500. Thirty young people ages 18-25 residing in Newark will be able to attend a live performance of the Garth Fagan Dance Company at the Smith Opera House on Saturday, September 26th, 2026.  More information will be available this summer to secure the tickets. https://www.garthfagan-dance.org/events-performances

A donation of $200 has been received from del Lago Resort and Casino to offset expenses for the arrival of Santa Claus and the family party that follows. This event is part of the village’s Home for the Holidays festivities. Santa will meet children at the Alex Eligh Community Center at 6:30 p.m. on November 29th, after the Lighted Parade which begins at 5:15 p.m.

Mayor Taylor stated, “The Community Center has been a part of shaping Newark’s youth for a very long time. The Village is delighted that these programs continue to evolve and expand with the needs of the community. These grants and donations, along with dedicated staff and the support of the community, make that progression possible.”

Alex Eligh Executive Director, Braxton Guy stated, “The UPLIFT Program began a month ago and has been off to a great start. The NYS OFCS Grant will help us strengthen and expand the program to reach even more youth. Our goal is to provide services for all youth in our area and provide the best role models and positive experiences that we can. These recent grants and donations help us further reach our goal.”
