Watertown International Airport Unveils New Terminal

SHARE NOW

The opening of a new terminal at the Watertown International Airport was announced by Governor Kathy Hochul on Nov. 14., marking a significant step in the ongoing redevelopment of the facility.

The 25,000-square-foot terminal features a spacious lobby, upgraded ticketing and baggage claim areas, and the airport’s first passenger jet bridge. It was constructed as part of a larger modernization effort aimed at enhancing the travel experience for residents, visitors, and personnel from nearby Fort Drum.

Watertown International Airport was one of nine Upstate airports awarded a combined $230 million in Fall 2022 through the Upstate Airport Economic Development and Revitalization Competition. The program is designed to promote and accelerate investment in Upstate commercial passenger airports. Of that funding, Watertown received $28 million specifically for its redevelopment.

Established in 1928, the airport handles more than 23,000 enplanements annually and generates over $29.4 million in economic activity, according to a recent report.

The new terminal sits beside the airport’s original 1947 structure, which lacked modern amenities, including a jet bridge and adequate waiting areas. Beginning this winter, crews will begin transforming the old terminal to include a restaurant, offices, and classroom or event spaces. A connector will eventually link the renovated building to the newly opened terminal. The $33 million revitalization project is expected to be completed by spring 2026.
