Ovid Town Board Issues No-Confidence Vote in Highway Superintendent

SHARE NOW

The Ovid Town Board has issued a unanimous vote of no confidence in Highway Superintendent Jeremy Huff, alleging repeated failures to perform required duties that officials say have caused financial losses and operational issues for the town.

The resolution, adopted November 12, outlines what board members describe as an ongoing pattern of neglect throughout 2024 and 2025. According to town officials, Huff is responsible for managing the highway department, overseeing budgets, maintaining the town barn and transfer station, and filing documentation for state reimbursements, including CHIPS funding.

Board members say Huff repeatedly fell short in those responsibilities. Key issues cited in the resolution include:

  • Late or missing payroll and vouchers, including omitted timecards and missed monthly submissions that resulted in late fees.
  • Incorrect budget coding, which the town says continued for more than a year despite repeated reminders.
  • Failure to file CHIPS reimbursement paperwork, which the town estimates cost Ovid about $480,000 in state funding.
  • Lack of oversight at the transfer station, including being unaware of an unauthorized hire in August.
  • Failure to respond to emails, texts, and requests from town officials regarding operations and budgets.

Town leaders say these accumulated problems have strained finances and delayed critical services, eroding confidence in Huff’s leadership.

The board is urging Huff to address the issues immediately, warning that continued failures could be considered a refusal to perform legally required duties. The resolution also notes that the town may pursue additional action, including referrals to state or county authorities or possible civil proceedings.

The measure takes effect immediately and will be filed with the Town Clerk and made public, according to the town.
