A Steuben County school district’s claims auditor did not properly audit all claims prior to payment, according to the state comptroller’s office.
The comptroller’s office conducted an audit of the Canisteo-Greenwood Central School District from July 1, 2023, through June 5, 2025. The audit was meant to determine whether the Board of Education’s appointed claims auditor was properly auditing claims prior to payment.
According to the comptroller’s office, of the 202 claims it reviewed, totalling $1.4 million, 105 claims, totalling approximately $804,000, should not have been approved as they lacked sufficient supporting documentation.
The comptroller’s office stated that each of the 202 claims was for a “proper district purpose;” however, the board had “no assurance that claims approved by the claims auditor complied with its written policies, and that each purchase was for a proper District purpose.”
The office added that the board has 90 days to prepare and submit a written corrective action plan that addresses the findings and recommendations contained within the audit.
The full audit can be viewed on the comptroller’s office’s website.
