A dominant run in the first half pushed Cayuga Community College Men’s Basketball to a road win over Finger Lakes Community College on Wednesday.
The Spartans broke open a close game with a lengthy run to end the first half on their way to an 83-75 win over the Lakers, with four players scoring at least 12 points. The victory makes Cayuga 2-2 on the season and 2-1 in Region III and Mid-State Athletic Conference play.
After the teams traded baskets in the early minutes, the Lakers built a 21-14 lead before the Spartans launched a 27-8 run to end the half. A three-pointer from Josiah Murphy put Cayuga up 13 at one point, and two free throws late in the half from Amaree Samuel gave the Spartans a 41-29 advantage headed into the break. Jadeir Breedlove and Kirk McFarlane powered the first half run for Cayuga, combining for 26 points in the stanza.
The lead grew to 17 early in the second half, but a Lakers rally cut the margin to nine points with less than 13 points left. Cayuga responded with a short run, with a layup by McFarlane making it 70-55 with 6:19 remaining. The Spartans led by double figures for much of the closing minutes before a late Lakers rally cut the final margin to eight.
Breedlove ended the game with 27 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, and McFarlane had 19 points and nine rebounds. Yagub Drammeh had 12 points and 11 rebounds, Samuel had 13 points, and Murphy had eight points and eight rebounds.
Cayuga is on the road again Sunday at defending national champion and current #1 Mohawk Valley Community College. Tipoff is scheduled for 12pm.
