A major flood resiliency and water quality project at Happiness House on Outhouse Road in the town of Canandaigua is nearly finished. According to the Finger Lakes Times, the project is about 95% complete, with only site stabilization and final grass growth remaining.
The $200,000 project, funded by FEMA, includes:
- A 2.5-acre flood and water quality basin
- Improved bio-retention areas
- Upgraded drainage systems
These improvements are designed to capture, slow, and treat stormwater before it flows into Sucker Brook and eventually Canandaigua Lake, helping to prevent future flooding events.
The project was initiated after, on July 9, 2023, 5.5 inches of rain fell on the area in just six hours, resulting in severe flooding along Sucker Brook. The town of Canandaigua, Happiness House, and the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Council collaborated to secure the FEMA grant.
Happiness House, operated by the Finger Lakes Cerebral Palsy Association, provides services to children and adults with disabilities.
Approximately 90% of the work has been completed by the town’s Highway Department, with assistance from neighboring municipalities. The town is being reimbursed for labor and equipment, keeping local costs low while maximizing federal funding.
The project is expected to be fully finished once the remaining site stabilization and grass growth are completed.
