The Hobart and William Smith community had the opportunity on Tuesday morning to see the future of transportation up close when Waymo, the autonomous driving technology company, brought one of its self-driving vehicles to campus. It was on display in front of the Scandling Campus Center, offering students a firsthand look at the technology shaping the next generation of mobility.
“This is a great opportunity for students to engage with one of the leading companies in autonomous vehicle innovation,” says Brandi Ferrara, assistant vice president for career services, prior to Tuesday morning’s visit. “Waymo’s visit not only showcases cutting-edge technology but also highlights the expanding intersections between AI, engineering and liberal arts education.”
The AI, Real Estate, and Advertising clubs will also have the chance to work with Waymo on case study projects.
The opportunity was made possible by New York State Senator Jeremy Cooney ’04 (D-56), a member of the HWS Board of Trustees.
Waymo says its mission is to make transportation safer and easier through fully autonomous vehicles powered by advanced artificial intelligence, sensors and mapping systems. The company said it is focused on building a future of sustainable transportation by expanding electric vehicle access and walkable, bikeable, and transit-oriented neighborhoods. Waymo has tested its vehicles in diverse driving conditions across the United States and currently operates Waymo One, a commercial ride-hailing service using self-driving cars, in cities such as Phoenix, Ariz., San Francisco, Calif., and Los Angeles, Calif., with ongoing expansions to additional metropolitan areas.
