Fire at Our Lady of Peace Parish Building in Geneva Contained Quickly

SHARE NOW

A fire broke out Sunday evening at Our Lady of Peace Parish in Geneva, but firefighters were able to contain it quickly, preventing major damage.

The fire started around 5:30 p.m. and was first noticed by people inside the building, who tried to put it out with a fire extinguisher before triggering the alarm and evacuating safely. Flames were found between the ceiling and the roof deck above the sprinkler system, which was working properly.

Smoke spread to a nearby apartment building, so residents were evacuated as a precaution and temporarily sheltered in a nearby church. EMS checked everyone on site, and by 8:00 p.m., all residents were able to return home.

Thanks to the fast response, the fire was under control in about 15 minutes, limiting damage to a small area. The cause is still under investigation.

Geneva Fire Chief Del Parrotta praised the crews for acting quickly to keep people safe and prevent further damage. Multiple agencies assisted at the scene, including several local fire departments, the Geneva Police Department, Ontario County Emergency Management, NYSEG, and the Geneva Housing Authority.
