A 77-year-old hunter from Massachusetts was found safe Wednesday evening after getting lost in the woods in the town of Richland, according to New York State Police.
Troopers say they were called around 4:35 p.m. to State Route 3 near Kelly Road after the man contacted Oswego County 911, reporting that he was lost and his phone battery was running low. Investigators later learned he had been struggling to navigate the terrain since about 1:30 p.m. and had become stuck in a marshy area earlier in the afternoon.
Initial attempts to locate the man using cell phone coordinates were unsuccessful. After roughly three hours of searching — which involved a State Police K9 team, multiple drones, and extensive ground crews — rescuers located him in a marsh about three-quarters of a mile from his vehicle. State Police say the man was in good health and did not suffer any injuries.
Authorities thanked the Oswego County Sheriff’s Office, Oswego County Pioneer Search and Rescue Team, Wilderness Search and Rescue of Onondaga, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, and Northern Oswego County Ambulance for their assistance in the search effort.
