As the government shutdown drags on and more families struggle to put food on the table due to the loss of SNAP benefits, residents across Seneca County are stepping up to make sure their neighbors don’t go hungry.
Executive Director Delores Morgan says the organization is offering food boxes Monday through Friday for anyone in need. “You just have to show up at the store, and we’ll get you all set and on your way out the door with a food box,” she told Jim and Sorah on Mix 98.5’s morning show.
Normally, families are eligible for a food box once a month, but Morgan says the need has grown so much that they’re now offering assistance more frequently. The House of Concern is also preparing 300 Thanksgiving food boxes, which have already been claimed, and will host a Thanksgiving meal the day before the holiday in partnership with the United Way and the Elks.
To keep shelves stocked, the organization is working closely with Foodlink and relying on support from the community. “The community has pulled together,” Morgan said. “They’re sending in food and monetary donations to make sure we’re well-equipped to handle the situation.”
Sales from the House of Concern Thrift Store on Locust Street in Waterloo also go directly toward funding the food pantry. Donations can be made online at houseofconcern.org
