Major Road Rehabilitation Project Underway in Ithaca

SHARE NOW

A $27.4 million project to overhaul some of Ithaca’s busiest roads is officially underway. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the start of the project, which will repave and modernize areas on Meadow Street, Fulton Street, and West Buffalo Street — improving safety, reducing congestion, and extending the lifespan of critical infrastructure.

The work, led by the New York State Department of Transportation, will include new road surfaces, upgraded traffic signals, improved sidewalks, and enhanced drainage systems.

“Upstate New York roadways can take a beating during the winter months,” Hochul said. “This investment in Ithaca’s vital roadways will keep people and goods moving safely while supporting long-term growth in the region.”

Upgrades include:

  • Full replacement of six traffic signals and upgrades to 14 others with video detection for better timing and reduced wait times.
  • New pavement markings to improve traffic flow.
  • 15,000 feet of new sidewalk, curb ramp upgrades, and a new flashing beacon on Route 13 near Esty Street to improve pedestrian safety.
  • Drainage repairs to improve resiliency and reduce flooding.

Most construction will take place at night to minimize disruptions, with completion expected by summer 2027.
