New York State Police say human remains found earlier this year in the town of New Haven have been identified as John Humphrey, an Oswego man who was reported missing more than a decade ago.

Investigators say a property owner on Darrow Road discovered the remains on September 1 while clearing a trail through wooded land. The Oswego County Sheriff’s Office initially responded, and DNA testing later confirmed the remains belonged to Humphrey, who was 48 years old when he disappeared in June 2012.

Police say Humphrey was last seen walking along State Route 104 near the New Haven Fire Department, after leaving his home at the Sumatra Apartments in Scriba. Despite extensive searches and public appeals over the years, he was never found.

A U.S. Army veteran, Humphrey’s cause of death remains undetermined, though investigators say there are no signs of foul play at this time.

State Police thanked the public and partnering agencies for their assistance throughout the investigation and extended condolences to Humphrey’s family.
