Bath police say a local man was arrested after allegedly stealing money from a donation box at a village business in October.
61-year-old Warren Hoffman was taken into custody last week and charged with petit larceny, criminal mischief in the fourth degree, and criminal possession of controlled substance in the seventh degree.
Police say the incident occurred on October 9 at Tractor Supply Co. on West Morris Street in Bath, where the Finger Lakes SPCA donation box had been broken into and all of its money taken. Hoffman was identified during the investigation, but could not be located at first, prompting the issuance of an arrest warrant.
Officers, with assistance from a New York State trooper, located Hoffman on Wilkes Avenue on October 30 and arrested him. Police also say a small amount of crack cocaine was found in his possession at the time.
Hoffman was processed, arraigned at Steuben County Jail, and released. Authorities note this is Hoffman’s second reported theft of an SPCA donation box in the village.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
