SHARE NOW

12 p.m. UPDATE:

The Yates County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash involving a Penn Yan Central School District bus and an unmarked Seneca County Sheriff’s Office vehicle.

Deputies say the collision happened at the intersection of Pre-Emption Road and State Route 54. The bus, driven by David Mulberger of Penn Yan, was carrying three juvenile passengers. The other vehicle, a Chevrolet Impala, was driven by Mateo Andrew of Seneca Falls, with 21-year-old Colton Rice of Clyde as a passenger.

No injuries were reported. Yates County investigators and accident reconstruction teams responded to the scene.

Deputies say the cause of the crash remains under investigation, but Andrew was issued a traffic ticket for failing to stop at a stop sign.

Penn Yan FD, Penn Yan Ambulance, Benton FD, Dresden FD, YC EMS, YC OES all assisted the Sheriff’s Office.

A Penn Yan school bus was flipped onto its side after being involved in an accident with a passenger vehicle just outside of the village this morning.  It happened at 7:30 on State Route 54 and Pre-Emption Road.

When first responders arrived on the scene, they reported the three students on board had been safely evacuated.  At this time, only minor injuries were reported.

The school district provided us with this statement: “This morning, a PYCSD School Bus was in a motor vehicle accident, EMS responded immediately, and medical care was provided on site. All impacted families were communicated with directly. The safety of our students and our staff is always our number one priority. We deeply appreciate our bus drivers and transportation staff, who day in and day out, across a range of weather conditions, safely transport our students.”

The accident remains under investigation, though emergency crews reported visibility at the time to be very low due to fog.

As of 11 a.m., the roadway reopened.

This is a developing story.  We will continue to update as more information is made available
