Schuyler County Historical Society to Break Ground on “Uplifting History!” Project

SHARE NOW

A new chapter in Schuyler County history is about to begin.

The Schuyler County Historical Society will break ground on its long-awaited Uplifting History! capital project on Wednesday at 3 p.m. at the Brick Tavern Museum in Montour Falls. The ceremony marks a decade of planning and a major step toward preserving one of the region’s most iconic landmarks.

In 2024, the Historical Society received $792,000 through the NY Forward program, part of Montour Falls’ downtown revitalization effort. The funding will support accessibility upgrades, new archives, and expanded exhibition space — including a new elevator to make the entire museum accessible to all visitors.

“This is a fantastic milestone for the Historical Society and for Montour Falls,” said Senator Tom O’Mara. “It shows how the NY Forward program can spark real community development and pride.”

Assemblyman Phil Palmesano called the project “a perfect way to honor the county’s rich heritage,” noting that the Brick Tavern, built in 1828, is Schuyler County’s oldest brick building.

Montour Falls Mayor Ryan agreed, saying the project represents “the beginning of a new chapter in preserving and celebrating our heritage.”

Once complete, the upgrades will modernize the museum’s archives — which already include more than 3,000 family names — and provide space to expand its growing collection of local artifacts. Two new exhibit areas are also planned.

“This groundbreaking is about taking steps to ensure that future generations of Schuyler County residents and visitors will have access to the history that makes this place so special,” said FLX Gateway Executive Director Judy McKinney Cherry.

Watkins Glen Area Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Nigar Hale added that the project will “transform what the museum can offer the community” with long-overdue upgrades in accessibility, preservation, and visitor experience.

The Brick Tavern Museum will be open the day of the groundbreaking and remain open through October 31, 2025, featuring the exhibit “200 Years: Seneca Lake & the Erie Canal Waterways.” Hours may adjust after November 1 based on construction needs.

“This isn’t just construction — it’s opportunity,” said Museum Executive Director Heather O’Grady-Evans. “Opportunity to preserve, grow, and create new experiences for everyone.”

The Brick Tavern Museum is located at 108 North Catharine Street (Route 14) in Montour Falls. Admission is free. Regular hours are Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and Thursday from 2 to 8 p.m
