The Ithaca area is getting some new artwork as part of a plan by Albany to create 56 new murals throughout New York State.
Governor Hochul has announced that 11 community partners have been chosen to create the murals across 21 counties as part of the Cultivating Havens for the Arts through Regional Murals, or CHARM program. The first round of CHARM is supported by $1 million allocated to it in the Fiscal Year 2025 state budget.
“Public art inspires and educates – it strengthens our civic pride and brings us together,” Governor Kathy Hochul said. “By supporting our innovative creative sector to work with communities all across the state, CHARM will reimagine everyday public spaces as vibrant destinations for visitors and residents alike.”
The Community Arts Partnership of Tompkins County and Ithaca Murals has been selected to create 14 murals in Ithaca and the Village of Brooktondale.
Murals are going up at outdoor, publicly accessible sites such as library entrances, theatres, and recreation centers. According to the governor, all murals will be completed by November.
