Schuyler County Candidates to Speak at Tonight’s Meet the Candidates Event

SHARE NOW

Four candidates for the Schuyler County Legislature will discuss their platforms at a “Meet the Candidates Night” tonight.  The event will be held in the Watkins Glen Elementary School auditorium starting at 6:30 p.m. and is open to the public.  It will be hosted by the Watkins Review and Express.

District 1 candidates Robert L. Halpin (Republican) and Joan Hendy-Kline (Common Sense Schuyler) are vying to represent the Towns of Catharine and Cayuta. Erich Asperschlager (Democrat and Common Sense Schuyler) is running for District 2, covering most of the southern half of the Town of Hector. Kimberly Rhode-Rozell (Republican) is on the ballot for District 3, the northern half of Hector, along with Gail Walker (Democrat).

Candidates will give timed remarks and answer selected questions from the audience. The session will be moderated, and Steven Decker, Republican incumbent and unopposed candidate for Town of Montour justice, will also be introduced.

Three candidates notified organizers that they could not attend: Alan Gregory, Republican incumbent for the Town of Dix council; Mark Taber, Republican candidate for the Town of Hector council; and David Scott, Republican incumbent for the Town of Montour supervisor.

This year’s election features 50 opposed and unopposed candidates for county and town positions. The non-partisan committee organizing the event said every candidate was invited to speak or be introduced, noting that low participation this year is disappointing. Last year’s event was canceled due to even fewer participants.
