William Smith field hockey first-year goalkeeper Olivia Terranova made a season-high 12 saves at Union this afternoon. The Herons were tied with the Garnet Chargers early in the second half, but three goals in a span of six minutes broke the contest open in a 5-2 Union win.

Terranova made five of her saves in the first quarter keeping the contest scoreless until the final minute. Megan Dorsey made a 20-yard pass from outside the circle that was tipped in front of the cage by Rachel Ostiguy, redirecting the ball under the cross bar.

The game remained 1-0 through halftime.

Early in the second half, William Smith equalized on graduate student Rebecca Mantione’s team-leading seventh goal of the season. The incredible shot was from a near-impossible angle, just inside the circle barely a yard off the end line to the right of the goal.

Less than two minutes later, Union moved back in front on a goal by Dorsey that was followed by tallies from Bobbi Serino and Maddie Greco, giving the Garnet Chargers a 4-1 lead after three quarters.

Union added another goal to its lead in the 48th minute before sophomore Caroline Kogut netted her fifth goal of the season in the 52nd minute. Senior Lily Gutch assisted on the score.

The Garnet Chargers (8-6, 3-1) finished the match with a 24-8 advantage in shots and an 11-4 edge in penalty corners.

William Smith (6-7, 1-2) will return home to host Houghton (8-3) in a non-conference match at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14.
