Canandaigua Woman Charged After 6-Year-Old Left Home Unsupervised

A Canandaigua woman is facing charges after police say a young child in her care was left unsupervised when she was found unresponsive inside her home.

Canandaigua Police said officers were called to West Gibson Street around 10:20 a.m. Oct. 1 for a report of a suspicious condition. When they arrived, they found 39-year-old Alyssa Hershberger inside the residence but unable to be awakened.

According to investigators, the situation left a 6-year-old child without supervision. The child reportedly left the home before police arrived, alarming neighbors and prompting the call to police.

After officers were able to wake Hershberger, she was taken into custody and charged with endangering the welfare of a child. She was released on an appearance ticket and is scheduled to answer the charge in Canandaigua City Court.

Police said the child was not injured and is now safe.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
