Scipio Man Charged After Domestic Incident, Firearm Found Unsecured

SHARE NOW

Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck says deputies arrested a Scipio man following a domestic incident.

Deputies responded to a home in the town of Scipio around 1:30 a.m. on September 27, where it’s alleged that 42-year-old Matthew Koziol struck a woman in the leg with a medical crutch during an argument. The victim was holding an infant at the time, and deputies say the injury caused significant swelling and pain.

While investigating, deputies also found a loaded shotgun in plain view that was not properly secured inside the home, where multiple minors live.

Koziol later turned himself in to the Sheriff’s Office around 8 a.m. the same day. He was charged with third-degree assault, endangering the welfare of a child, and failure to safely store firearms, all misdemeanors.

He was processed and released on his own recognizance following an appearance in CAP Court.

The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation, and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
