Congressman John Mannion is asking that his paychecks be withheld for the duration of the government shutdown.
In a Facebook post, Congressman John Mannion wrote, “Members of Congress should play by the same rules as others across our federal workforce – if members of the military and our TSA agents are forced to work without pay, so should we.”
In a letter dated September 30, accompanying the post, Congressman Mannion asked the US House of Representatives Chief Administrative Officer, Chatherine Szpindor, to withhold his congressional salary until the shutdown ends.
“I stand in solidarity with the more than 6,500 federal workers in NY-22, as well as their families, who work every day to keep our country safe and serve their community. I respectfully ask that you withhold my pay until an appropriations agreement has been signed into law and the shutdown has ended,” wrote Congressman Mannion.
He has also added a Government Shutdown FAQ page to his congressional website.
Lawmakers failed to pass a bill to fund the government before the Wednesday deadline, causing the shutdown. Because of this, non-essential employees have been put on temporary, unpaid leave.
Congressman Mannion represents New York’s 22nd Congressional District, which includes the southern half of Cayuga County, including Auburn.
