A Newark man is facing murder charges after police discovered human remains in Wayne County.
On Tuesday, Newark Police say they received a report from a caller who overheard a conversation suggesting someone had been killed and the body disposed of in the Sodus area.
That information led officers to 35-year-old Jared Nesmith, who was spotted walking in the village. Police say Nesmith tried to run but was quickly taken into custody.
During questioning, investigators say Nesmith provided information about the location of the body, which was later found by a New York State Police K9 unit along the Zurich Bog Trail. State Police forensic teams processed the scene.
Nesmith has been charged with second-degree murder, tampering with physical evidence, and concealment of a human corpse. He is being held at the Wayne County Jail, where he is expected to be arraigned.
Newark Police are leading the investigation with assistance from State Police and other agencies. Authorities say the case remains active and are asking anyone with information to call the Newark Police Department at (315) 331-3701 or the non-emergency line at (315) 946-9711.
The fact that a defendant has been charged with a crime is merely an accusation and the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
