The New York State Police are investigating an incident in which a trooper shot a dog while conducting an investigation in the Town of Mamakating.
Troopers say the incident happened around 12:20 p.m. last Wednesday, while a trooper from the Wurtsboro barracks was conducting neighborhood interviews near a home on Elm Road.
According to State Police, the trooper rang the doorbell and heard a dog inside the home. When the resident opened the door, the dog ran out aggressively toward the trooper. Backed into a corner without cover or a way to retreat, the trooper fired his weapon multiple times, striking the dog.
The dog was taken to a nearby veterinary clinic for treatment. Additional troopers and a supervisor also responded to the scene.
The incident remains under investigation.
