With New York City’s mayoral election just weeks away, Governor Kathy Hochul has thrown her support behind Zohran Mamdani, bypassing incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent.
In an essay published in The New York Times, Hochul outlined her reasons for backing Mamdani, noting that while they represent different wings of the Democratic Party, their conversations revealed Mamdani as a capable and thoughtful leader. “I’ve spent time talking with Zohran Mamdani, and in those conversations, I heard a leader,” Hochul wrote.
Mamdani, who drew strong support from Democratic primary voters, has nonetheless faced hesitation from many of the city’s Democratic elected officials. Hochul’s endorsement is a high-profile boost for the progressive candidate as the general election approaches.
The governor emphasized that despite their ideological differences, she sees shared values and a commitment to serving the people of New York City. With less than two months until Election Day, her support could influence voters in the crucial final stretch of the campaign.
House Republican Leadership Chairwoman Elise Stefanik, who is seriously considering a run for the Republican nomination for Governor in 2026, released the following statement:
“As I always said, it was only a matter of time before the Worst Governor in America, Kathy Hochul, would bend the knee to the Communist Antisemite Zohran Mamdani.
At the exact moment when New Yorkers are looking for strong leadership from their Governor, with a majority opposing Zohran Mamdani, Kathy Hochul embraces this raging Communist who will destroy New York, making it less affordable and more dangerous – once again putting criminals and communists first, and New Yorkers LAST.
Kathy Hochul OWNS every radical position like defunding the police, releasing violent criminals on our streets, closing local small businesses in favor of government grocery stores, massive tax hikes, abolishing border law enforcement, and every heinous pro-Hamas antisemitic position.
Kathy Hochul is clearly too scared of her own abysmal polling among Democrat voters that she is desperately shoring up her Far Left Democrat flank, and choosing to destroy New York for hardworking families across our state.
Make no mistake, New Yorkers will fire Kathy Hochul once and for all next November.”
