The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has opened submissions for its annual Arbor Day Poster Contest, inviting photographers and artists of all ages to showcase the beauty and importance of trees.
The contest, led by DEC’s Urban and Community Forestry Program, produces a poster each year to highlight the many benefits trees bring to people, nature, and the environment. The 2026 poster will feature the winning artwork, which will be distributed statewide at schools, libraries, conservation councils, the New York State Fair, and Arbor Day events.
“Trees are powerful allies in building resilient communities, ecosystems, and a healthier future,” said DEC Commissioner Amanda Lefton. “As we work toward our goal of planting 25 million trees by 2033, this contest gives New Yorkers a chance to share their vision and inspire others to celebrate, plant, and protect trees.”
Agriculture Commissioner Richard A. Ball added that trees are central to New York’s landscape, agriculture, and economy, noting their role in maple syrup production, wood products, air quality, and water protection.
This year’s theme, “Trees for the Future,” encourages entries that reflect the connections between people and trees, their role in climate resilience, and the importance of planting for future generations.
Submissions are being accepted through Nov. 30, 2025, and must feature trees growing in New York State. Entries are limited to one per person and must meet image quality requirements.
The contest is sponsored by the New York State Arbor Day Committee, which includes DEC, the Department of Agriculture and Markets, the Empire State Forestry Foundation, the New York State Arborists Association, and Sylvamo North America.
