State Gives Okay to Hammondsport Water Project

SHARE NOW

The Village of Hammondsport is moving forward with significant upgrades to its municipal water system after state officials determined the project will not have a significant environmental impact.

Serving roughly 725 residents in Hammondsport and the Town of Urbana, the village’s water system has struggled with aging infrastructure, undersized mains, and outdated equipment that no longer meets current code.

Planned improvements include replacing filters, pumps, and the chlorine contact tank at the treatment plant, switching from gas chlorination to a liquid sodium hypochlorite system, and adding an emergency generator. The half-million-gallon Reservoir Road storage tank will be removed, while the one-million-gallon Beers Hill tank will be upgraded. Crews will also replace old cast-iron and 4-inch mains with larger ductile iron pipe, install new hydrants and valves, and inspect the raw water intake for potential replacement.

Officials say the upgrades will enhance the reliability and safety of the village’s water supply for years to come.
