The New York State Thruway Authority is asking drivers to weigh in on the future of fueling facilities at its 27 service area locations.
With current fuel contracts set to expire in 2027, the Authority has launched an online customer survey to help shape a new fuel services proposal that will be issued in 2026.
“The Thruway Authority is dedicated to providing a modern, efficient and customer-first experience,” said Executive Director Frank G. Hoare, Esq. “This survey is a critical step in making sure upgrades reflect the needs of both commercial and non-commercial drivers.”
The survey — available at ThruwayFuel.com through the end of September — asks drivers about fuel types, payment options, convenience store features, sustainability, and other travel needs.
Passenger vehicle drivers and commercial truckers are both encouraged to participate. Questions for truck drivers specifically focus on parking availability, fueling habits, travel patterns, and readiness for medium- and heavy-duty electric vehicles.
The results will be used to shape the Thruway’s next fuel services contract.
Service Area Redevelopment Update
The survey comes as the Thruway’s $450 million Service Area Redesign and Redevelopment Project nears completion. The project, which began in 2021, redeveloped all 27 service areas through a public-private partnership with Empire State Thruway Partners. No toll or tax dollars were used for construction.
As part of the effort, Applegreen is installing at least four universal high-speed EV chargers at every service area, with larger locations offering up to eight. Currently, there are 79 charging stations on the Thruway; that number is expected to reach 115 by the end of 2025.
The Thruway’s service areas remain open 24/7 and offer food, restrooms, fuel, and Taste NY markets at select locations.
